Founded in 1964 under the name Berliner Jazztage, Jazzfest Berlin is one of Europe's oldest and most renowned jazz festivals. In 1969, on the occasion of Duke Ellington's 70th birthday, it welcomed the cream of the jazz world: Miles Davis, Sarah Vaughn, Thelonious Monk, Lionel Hampton, and many others. The highlight of this edition was the concert given by Duke Ellington and his orchestra on the famous stage of the Berlin Philharmonic.
